The Grand Prize winner, Team LegoAces (Granville, OH), earned a VIP trip to LEGOLAND Florida® in October. Team Just Ducky (Woodbury, MN) was awarded second place and third place went to Team Lunar Lords (Bellevue, WA). All three teams will receive free team registration for the 2012 FIRST® robotics season.

PLAYA VISTA, CA (February 17, 2011) – Today, the X PRIZE Foundation announced the official roster of 29 registered teams competing for the $30 million Google Lunar X PRIZE, an unprecedented competition to send a robot to the Moon that travels at least 500 meters and transmit video, images, and data back to the Earth. This group of teams signifies this new era of exploration’s diverse and participatory nature as it includes a huge variety of groups ranging from non-profits to university consortia to billion dollar businesses representing 17 nations on four continents.

Astrobotic Technology, one of dozens of companies competing for the $30 million Google Lunar X PRIZE, announced today that they have signed a contract with Space Exploration Technologies, commonly known as SpaceX, for a launch on board a Falcon 9 rocket. The launch, targeted to take place in late 2013, will propel Astrobotic's robotic lander and rover towards the surface of the Moon, where the team hopes it will explore the lunar surface and send back HD, 3D footage.

This week we bring you team videos from a European team, Euroluna, and a U.S.-based "Hopper" team, Next Giant Leap. Team Eurolunahas members in Denmark, Switzerland, and Italy, and plans to start testing some hardware in space this year (their CubeSat is currently scheduled for launch in May 2011). The team emphasizes not only the importance of creating commercial solutions to space exploration, but also having a bit of fun while we're at it.
